IC INFORMATION

Name: Ironeye
Canon: Elden Ring: Nightreign
Age: Unknown, adult
Gender: Male
Species: Human, undead (Those Who Live in Death)
Appearance: https://markingnight.dreamwidth.org/file/4455.jpg
Canon point: After slaying Heolstor

History: Ironeye was a member of a mercenary outfit known as the Fellowship, which "travel[s] around the world, settling conflicts through clandestine acts". In particular, he was feared for his "split-second judgment" and knack for exploiting enemy weaknesses, as well as his ability to exert control over battles from a distance with his bow. A member in good standing, his interactions with his fellow assassins seem to have been businesslike but cordial.

At the instruction of his handler, Isolde, Ironeye traveled to the Limveld region to track down a traitor to the Fellowship, known as 'the Monster'. Upon his arrival, however, he was sidetracked and summoned to the magical Roundtable Hold to serve as a Nightfarer -- one who braves the supernatural Night (a magical natural disaster involving endless azure rain) to slay a being known as the Nightlord. Ironeye agreed, and thereupon began simultaneously tracking his quarry while also joining his fellow Nightfarers on expeditions into Limveld to slay the Nightlords one by one.

In battling the Nightlords, Ironeye worked tirelessly with his seven fellow Nightfarers in seamless cooperation – surprising, for a man used to operating alone. In fact, most of Ironeye’s abilities actually make him an incredible group cooperator: his Eagle Eye passive suggests that he spends a good deal of time looking out for useful gear for his friends, his Marking skill significantly boosts his teammates’ damage, and his Single Shot art is enormously useful for reviving fallen comrades or quickly creating a moment’s breathing room for the party. His tendency to hang back at range also earned him a spot looking out for his fellows; by all accounts, he served as a conscientious and invaluable source of support.

Eventually, Ironeye found the Monster, only to discover his quarry was an alternate version of himself from another world, as imparted to him by the Duchess of the Roundtable Hold. The Monster had succumbed to the allure of the Night and abandoned his duty, choosing instead to hunt his fellow Nightfarers; in so doing, he had turned traitor to both the Fellowship and the Hold. Despite having his target within his grasp, however, and stabbing the man with great dexterity, Ironeye found that the Monster simply would not die. With resignation, the Monster revealed that neither Ironeye nor the Monster could be killed by conventional means.

Ironeye was obliged to track down an artifact that could kill the Monster, at the man's own request. At the Duchess’s guidance, he and his fellow Nightfarers slew the Nightlord Fulghor, whose life lived in servitude to the divine had imbued his great spear with uncommon holy power. Ironeye returned with a fragment of this spear to confront his otherworldly counterpart, as agreed.

In return, the Monster revealed a truth that Ironeye had forgotten as a side effect of his continued exposure to the Night: Both men were part of Those Who Live in Death, a faction of undead afflicted by a curse that did not "allow them to rest" until the Nightlord was defeated. Through found correspondence, it is revealed that the Fellowship simply kills its own assassins after they have outlived their usefulness to the organization. Moreover, it is suggested that Isolde was murdered by the Fellowship for voicing a traitorous ambition: to extend the Night to ensure that Ironeye and his fellows may fight on endlessly, free from the influence of their masters.

After killing the Monster in compliance with his original orders, Ironeye resolves to slay the Nightlord Heolstor in accordance with his agreement with the Roundtable Hold. After doing so, however, he is confronted by an enigmatic, corpselike figure, seemingly connected to Heolstor. By killing this being, Ironeye can ensure that the Night will indeed continue for the foreseeable future, ravaging the land of Limveld but also fulfilling Isolde's dream. The question: What will he do...?

Canonwise, Ironeye’s most prominent working relationship was with Duchess, the mistress of the Roundtable Hold. While Duchess acknowledges that their comrades may find Ironeye’s profession unnerving, she trusts in his loyalty, asks for his discretion in performing the unenviable duty of tracking down a former comrade who has broken his oath to the Hold, and ultimately accepts his nature as one of Those Who Live in Death, claiming that she needs nothing more than to know they strive for the same cause. Their relationship seems to be one of professional respect.

In contrast, Ironeye seems to have been genuinely friendly with Raider, an old pirate whom he developed a personal interest in after reading about the history of the coastal waters around Limveld. He attends every match of Raider’s tourney, admits to being jealous that he could not enter as combatant, cheers his friend on, and assures him that he’ll “never forget what [Raider has] achieved.”

While not explicitly shown, it can be inferred that Ironeye, as one of Those Who Live in Death, likely suffered persecution by the Golden Order religious fundamentalists, who see his kind as aberrations – living proof that their beloved Golden Order is flawed, as they exist outside its blessed cycle of rebirth. As such, some fundamentalists in the world of Elden Ring even devote their lives to hunting down and dispatching the undead. Ironeye, unlike many of his fellows, apparently passes as a member of the living, but it is extremely likely that he regularly concealed his nature, and his manner of dress (almost completely covered, with only his eyes visible) is at least partially due to this secrecy.

Personality answers:
Your character must live with only one sense for a year. They are allowed to choose. What do they pick? Why? How do they cope?
Ironeye would pick his sight without question. As an archer, he relies on his excellent sense of sight to hit his marks, keep an eye out for his allies, and spot fleeting opportunities to strike. As a pragmatist, it’s extremely unlikely he’d hold out for any other sense out of sentimentality or similar.

However, his hearing would be a close second for… much the same reasons. He operates in extremely hostile conditions, in which most people and creatures he encounters are out to kill him and his friends. To be able to hear an enemy soldier’s shouts or incoming hoofbeats is essential, and thus to be forced to operate without his hearing would likely wear him down over time and require extra vigilance. It’s highly likely that Ironeye would find ways to compensate for hearing loss, whether by learning to pick up on more visual cues or relying on his teammates’ signals.

In terms of communicating with others, well… he is capable of reading and writing, even if it'd be slower going than speech. He might be able to come up with simple hand signals to communicate in combat situations, but it’s also highly likely that his fellow Nightfarers may simply understand much of his intent on the battlefield simply by spending so much of their time together. As for strangers, however... it would likely be a frustrating and painstaking year. He might simply withdraw to his closest associates when weary of dealing with the problem.

As a note, taste and smell, arguably the most emotionally-tied of the senses, would likely be the first he’d do away with. As a career assassin, it seems he has little attachment to remembrances of home, or memories of family – he has none! Hooray!

What does your character think about physical appearances? Are they the sort to meticulously primp themselves, or could they not care less?
While Ironeye does seem to take a somewhat utilitarian outlook to his default armor set, his optional skins suggest a bit of dramatic flair. For example, his default costume has practical elements (pouches for his supplies, light armor scale for ease of movement, throwing daggers laid out for quick access), but also surprisingly intricate detailing (carefully tied cords to secure his boots and waist, a feathered hood that must be hell to clean). In whole, one might conclude that:

- He likes snazzy hats
- He likes to maintain as close to full-body coverage as possible
- His clothing tends to be well-traveled, but also well cared-for

It’s quite likely that if asked, he would claim to care foremost about usefulness, but he also kind of dresses like an edgelord.

Even more than his clothing, however, is the meticulous way Ironeye cares for his gear. He’ll spend his free time carefully sharpening his arrows, or testing the elasticity of his bowstring. It’s not a stretch to say that he depends on his equipment to keep him alive, but he takes the extra step by having his bow custom-made (apparently, one of the Fellowships most finely crafted weapons) and even fitting his quiver with a custom collapsible greatbow. These things never leave his side, and are as much a part of him as his own limbs.

What would your character say is their best trait? What is truly their best trait?
What he thinks is his best trait: relentlessness. Ironeye believes that his endurance and willingness to pursue his marks mercilessly is the key to his success. He’ll brave snowfields, fiery craters, risk life and limb, etc. without batting an eye. While it certainly serves his career as an assassin, however, his true value lies in his apparent skill in working with others.

For someone who lives his life as a lone assassin, Ironeye's in-game kit revolves around being the perfect teammate. All of his abilities are geared towards providing value for not only himself but his allies, from risking his own safety to boost their damage capacity to instantly reviving them from the break of death (in Nightreign, you beat up downed allies to revive them, so a nice AoE arrow blast works great!). His chosen weapon specialty, the bow, is perfect for harrying and debuffing enemies so his friends can finish them off.

His senses additionally allow his allies to find relevant gear quickly. Mage? He can find you the perfect staff to drop a magical moon on your enemies. Heavy? Here's a free Frozen Rotten Greataxe, enjoy. He simply makes life easier for others by swinging into an empty role when someone needs him.

This is surprisingly not a trait shared across all Nightfarers, and thus likely reflects Ironeye’s own personality. Executor, for example, has abilities that mainly benefit himself, and also spends almost all his time painting quietly in an isolated corner; Raider’s kit is all about taking hits and sometimes actively griefing his teammates. Ironeye is that guy who says he’s a lone wolf, but always come back from the store with something for his friends.

What would be your character's lowest, darkest moment they've lived through? How did they respond to their troubles and face their demons?
In Ironeye’s Remembrance Ending, he responded to the sudden realization that:

- he was already dead
- he had to murder an alternate universe version of himself
- his longtime guardian and mentor, Isolde, had been murdered
- his employer was planning to kill him

by deciding to plunge the world into eternal Night for the forseeable future, affording him an (un-)lifetime of endless battle. “For now, my night shall never end.” He does, technically, fulfill his oaths to both the Fellowship and the Roundtable Hold in both killing the Monster and Heolstor. In spirit, though, both would likely be very irate with him, and he does it in seemingly cold blood, in pursuit of the freedom he says he never realized would be possible without Isolde’s guidance.

One might thus conclude that:

- despite his cool, methodical manner, he’s also a little bit of a blood knight
- he leaves the door open for the Night to eventually end by some unknown future means
- he either doesn’t mind that his fellow Nightfarers will also be irate with him (and may potentially hunt him down afterwards), or looks forward to it

To be clear, the player can also choose to simply have Ironeye fulfill his duty as Nightfarer by restoring grace and order to Limveld and peacefully leaving the Roundtable Hold. …But on his worst day, Ironeye’s response is “FUCK IT, WE BALL.”

Inventory:
- Ironeye's Bow with Storm Ruler. An otherwise ordinary bow that allows the user to charge and fire smaller sword energy slashes, or one big boy energy slash.
- Flask of Crimson Tears. A healing potion with three charges by default. Refills after resting.
- Rivers of Blood. His favorite katana. Striking an enemy with its blade causes enemies to build up the Blood Loss status. Once they hit their limit of their resistance, they undergo a sudden burst of blood loss/damage. Its weapon skill, Corpse Piler, allows for shooting short-range blades of blood that have the same Blood Loss effect.
- Ironeye's Dagger. It's a curved dagger.

Powers/Abilities:
Immortality: As a Nightfarer and one of Those Who Live in Death, Ironeye cannot be permanently killed by ordinary means. Completely destroying his body results in him reforming in a weakened state, usually nearby. He can still eat, bleed, breathe, sleep, be poisoned, frozen, etc., but his life can only be truly ended using an especially concentrated source of the power of the Golden Order.

Nightfarer abilities:
- Immunity to fall damage.
- Ability to interact with spectral... stuff?: Can summon and ride Spectral Hawk mounts if they happen to be nearby, can use Spiritspring updrafts (also if they're nearby) to leap great distances, can interact with weird magical Spirit Shelter tree goo to be transported into a little pocket dimension.

Personal abilities:
- Passive: Eagle Eye. Gives his team an increased chance of finding more valuable gear and weapons. Basically, he's got a good eye for finding useful stuff.
- Skill: Marking. This is a medium-range cutting dash skill that allows Ironeye to noclip through targets. He wounds anything he cuts, creating a Mark debuff that makes them suffer 10% more damage from all attacks. If enough damage is dealt to a Marked target, the Mark explodes for some burst damage and staggers enemies. Also works as an air dash
- Ultimate: Single Shot. Fires a supersonic arrow and releases a massive shockwave that deals damage in a large area, which can also knock down most small or medium-sized enemies. Also damages terrain and grants up to a few seconds of invulnerability.

Generally speaking, Ironeye is a particularly skilled assassin that also has a ton of experience fighting all kinds and sizes of enemies (human, animal, dragon, demon, space alien, cerberus, demigod, giant bug with orbital lasers...).

Player Goals: I've been out of the RP game for a while, but ended up liking Nightreign so much I thought it'd be cool to come back and play one of my favorite characters. It's interesting to see how a gravelly voiced John Nightreign man reacts to different personalities, and I personally think the concept of Those Who Live in Death as a faction is pretty cool! Since he's already familiar with alternate worlds and timeline weirdness, I think he'd be pretty easy to slot into a game and see how he adapts.
