CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Ironeye
Canon: Elden Ring: Nightreign
Age: Unknown, adult
If Under 16, why is this character a good thematic fit for Somnia?: N/A
Canon Point: After defeating Heolstor (all Nightlords slain)
Wiki Link(s): The wikis are sparse, so...

Ironeye was a member of a mercenary outfit known as the Fellowship, which "travel[s] around the world, settling conflicts through clandestine acts". In particular, he was feared for his "split-second judgment" and knack for exploiting enemy weaknesses, as well as his ability to exert control over battles from a distance with his bow.

At the instruction of his handler, Isolde, Ironeye traveled to the Limveld region to track down a traitor to the Fellowship, known as 'the Monster'. Upon his arrival, however, he was sidetracked and summoned to the magical Roundtable Hold to serve as a Nightfarer -- one who braves the supernatural Night (a magical natural disaster involving endless azure rain) to slay a being known as the Nightlord. Ironeye agreed, and thereupon began simultaneously tracking his quarry while also joining his fellow Nightfarers on expeditions into Limveld to slay the Nightlords one by one.

Eventually, Ironeye found the Monster, only to discover his quarry was an alternate version of himself from another world. The Monster had succumbed to the allure of the Night and abandoned his duty, choosing instead to hunt his fellow Nightfarers. Despite having his target within his grasp, however, and stabbing the man with great dexterity, Ironeye found that the Monster simply would not die. With resignation, the Monster revealed that neither Ironeye nor the Monster could be killed by conventional means.

Ironeye was obliged to track down an artifact that could kill the Monster, at the man's own request. In return, the Monster revealed a truth that Ironeye had forgotten as a side effect of his continued exposure to the Night: Both men were part of Those Who Live in Death, a faction of undead afflicted by a curse that did not "allow them to rest" until the Nightlord was defeated.

Through found correspondence, it is revealed that the Fellowship simply kills its own assassins after they have outlived their usefulness to the organization. Moreover, it is suggested that Isolde was murdered by the Fellowship for voicing a traitorous ambition: to extend the Night to ensure that Ironeye and his fellows may fight on endlessly, free from the influence of the Fellowship.

After killing the Monster in compliance with his original orders, Ironeye resolves to slay the Nightlord Heolstor in accordance with his agreement with the Roundtable Hold. After doing so, however, he is confronted by an enigmatic, corpselike figure, seemingly connected to Heolstor. By killing this being, Ironeye can ensure that the Night will indeed continue for the foreseeable future, ravaging the land of Limveld but also fulfilling Isolde's dream. The question: What will he do...?

SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
Definitely a wish! Ever since learning of what his employer had in store for him, Ironeye's wish for personal freedom has become impossible to ignore. As someone who was raised by the Fellowship to be a perfect killing instrument, he doesn't even fully understand what "freedom" means... but he does long to taste it. In fact, he's willing to do almost anything to possess it. Somnia ironically offers him freer reign than he'd likely be able to obtain in canon, since his former employer would be apt to send his fellow undead to hunt him down once they realized he'd turned traitor.

2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
Adaptation and the will to stand and fight -- these two are Ironeye's reactions to most any adversity. His time as a Nightfarer required him to stand with fellow warriors of eras and species he had never encountered before; together, they faced demons, ancient dragons, incomprehensible beings from beyond the stars, and the very Shape of Night. He has little time or inclination to spend on brooding on himself when danger's afoot, which no doubt is partially due to his already being dead. What could be worse than that, right?

More generally, player characters don't have a ton of control in general in Nightreign; their lot is to fight what is implied to be an almost doomed, unending battle against natural forces. Transformation is also a heavy theme in Elden Ring in general, where humans often turn into terrifying abominations, so that part will be pretty familiar to Ironeye!

3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
Ironeye is quick to form bonds of companionship in the face of danger. Part of working as a solo assassin was, funnily enough, procuring all of his own supplies, information, and allies -- meaning that he's actually pretty good at creating working relationships and watching others' backs. Deeper connections are apt to take more time, as a lot of personal details about Ironeye are things that he's supposed to keep closer to his vest: his undead curse, his status as an assassin, his decision to turn his back on his former Fellowship. Those that earn his trust receive an abiding and deep regard, difficult to untangle.

Which is to say that at the very least, he shouldn't suffer from a lack of protective connections with others. He's pretty even-keeled most of the time. With any luck, over time he'll be able to develop deeper and healthy connections.

4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.) Duty vs desire. As an assassin, Ironeye takes his jobs seriously, carefully keeps records of his progress, responds to his handler with unfailing politeness, and will not relent until his target is duly slain upon his own personal oath. Whatever personal feelings he has are systematically set aside in favor of sellsword good boy points. Once he realizes his Fellowship views him as disposable, however, and that there is a way out? He ultimately chooses to follow his own selfish desires instead. It's the biggest decision of his life, and it takes the death of his handler to accomplish. Once he makes his choice, however, it's all aboard the "I want an unlife of glorious eternal battle" train.

VESSEL SELECTION
Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? Token (aeromancer)
Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Ironeye has a lot of theming that resonates with air in particular -- he's an archer, he rides spectral hawks, he's got a feather motif in his design, he longs for freedom (y'know, like a bird), his ultimate art consists of "shooting an arrow that surpasses sound" and is accompanied by a big ol' blast of wind... and one of his favorite activities when idle seems to be finding the nearest cliff and staring out at the open sky.

Choose one OR list three subclass options within your chosen Vessel type that you think would suit them: Aeromancer
